Chapter VII
What is the Matter with Catastrophes?
The Response from an Artist

This chapter presents a series of photos derived from a performative art installation of “What is the Matter with Catastrophes?”. A central element of the work revolves around a time-lapse film that depicts a chicken embryo in its early stages of development. The film begins with the yolk – an abstract, sun-like, yellow monochrome image, which starts to morph and grow. From a network of red capillaries to the beating heart, we witness the embryo forming into a fully-fledged fetus complete with eyes and beak. The film ends abruptly, uncertain of the fetus’ fate before looping back to the beginning. The screen displaying the film is made from paper. Rather than acting as a mere passive support or functional surface, attention is drawn to the screen as an object, endowed with an active and transformative role.

The evolution of embryo reflecting catastrophe and future uncertainly.
